A couple of links above are to articles talking about why travel is actually good for you. I love traveling. I was bit by the travel bug about 10 years ago when a friend suggested I tag along with her and a group to Amsterdam for a few days. It was my first trip abroad and it set something off inside me. Before this trip, I was extremely cautious, and controlling. I did not like to go outside of my comfort zone, it scared me. I was a pretty picky eater, I had a routine, I did not like shaking my world up. But this trip, and so many after that, showed me that it's a good thing to push yourself outside of that comfort zone and experience life, cultures, destinations, weird foods, extreme temperatures, getting lost, and finding your way. I'd like to think it, and every trip after that, has made me just a little more curious, flexible, and worldly.
A few reasons these articles include why traveling is good for you:
-Improving problem solving skills
-Trying new things builds your skills and competencies
-Saying yes to new experiences expands yourself
-Curiousity and Meaning of Life
-Reviving the Palate
-Learning to Share (big lesson over here for the only-child. Sharing is a hard one for me)
-Cultivating humor (so many stories)
-Being Patient (another big one for me- I have always been extremely impatient, so just waiting in the customs line at the airport really helps me work on this)
-Team Synergy (traveling with a companion- you get to experience unique things together which really can create an amazing lifelong bond)
-Rejuvenating the Body (random hikes along cliffs to start the day- sure why not?!)
-Allowing Flexibility (oh the whole town closes at 2pm for a city-wide siesta? Better have a plan B)
-Seeing Things in Proper Perspective (a big one- you may think your life sucks that you can't afford that new iphone until you drive through rural Jamaica and see how hard life can really be- and how grateful you should be)
March is apparently a great month for travel deals- so start planning your next vacation right now!
